Delighted to see the Lions hump South Africa on their home turf this afternoon. I can't believe though we lost the series 2-1, we should have won the 2nd Test and lost the first one in the first 20 minutes. South Africa did not impress me at all apart from their doggedness and that early spurt in the 1st Test, they didn't impress me either when they won the World Cup a couple of years ago. My son, who is 11, thinks Francois Steyn looks and plays like a girl.
Some of our guys were superb, Mike Phillips looks world class as did Jamie Roberts in the 2nd test whilst Tommy Bowe is pacey and strong.
It might have been a meaningless game on paper but it didn't look that way when it started. We dominated them and looked very comfortable throughout. That was the most impressive Lions performance since we tanked Australia in the 1st test in 2001. We were also tanking them in the 2nd Test first half until Johnny Wilkinson decided to give them a chance at the start of the 2nd half by throwing a pass to one of their players to give them a try. The rest, unfortunately, is history.
Still, those who decry the ongoing validity and worthiness of the Lions touring may have to think again. This was an amazingly exciting Test series, packed full of incident and drama and once again there was a huge travelling support for the tourists. It made for a great sporting occasion.
